Developing Numerical Reasoning through Questioning
Numerical reasoning is about learners thinking for themselves, working out what they need to do in order to solve a problem, being able to show clearly what they are doing, and convince someone else that they are correct and how they know.
These questions have been designed to support the progressive development of numerical reasoning. The questions have been organised into the following categories:
Identifying processes and connections, RUCSAC, Getting started on the problem – Read, Underline
Represent & communicate, RUCSAC, Working through and solving – Calculation, Solve, Answer
Review, RUCSAC, Checking solution, is it sensible – Check

It is important that the questions become a natural part of teaching for all staff working with learners. Introducing questions at a steady pace, with all staff focusing on using the question where possible will help to embed the questioning skills.
Questions can be displayed around the classroom to remind staff to use them where appropriate. In the best practice, the questions are developed throughout the school ensuring continued progression. It can also be beneficial to involve parents in using the questioning, e.g. A question of the term, with examples on the website.
